Currently Featuring: SUERTE 7-YEAR KING'S CROWN EXTRA AÑEJO TEQUILA
Boulder, Colorado-based entrepreneurs Laurence Spiewak and Lance Sokol co-founded Suerte Tequila in 2012. Suerte tequilas, NOM 1530, are produced in Los Altos, Jalisco where Suerte's Master Distiller Pedro Hernandez Barba crafts a single tequila brand - a rarity in today's mass tequila market. The brand is built out of a strong desire to offer consumers an authentic tequila while carefully pushing the boundaries of tradition for a more progressive experience.
Suerte uses pure spring water and estate-grown agave from the highlands of Jalisco. The agave piñas are slow-roasted in a traditional brick oven for 52 hours. Suerte crushes the cooked piñas with a mechanically-driven, two-ton stone wheel (Tahona), slowly and repetitively, for sixteen hours, releasing all the juices. By using the tahona for 100% of their tequila, Suerte develops nuances of flavor you can't achieve otherwise.
The juice from the crushed agave is mixed with pure spring water and placed in fermentation tanks along with proprietary yeast. Fermentation takes a few days, followed by a 17-hour double-distillation process (first using stainless, then finished in copper pot stills). Suerte's "King's Crown" Single-Barrel limited edition is aged in charred American white oak whisky barrels for 7 years, resulting in a truly unique tequila.
Tequila Connection reviewed Suerte's "King's Crown" Extra Anejo, Batch Number XA301122, on 18 May 2019. All tasting was performed using the official tequila glass from Riedel with tequila served at room temperature. Here are the results:
This 80 proof spirit's appearance is between amber and copper; very inviting. The body is medium-heavy oils. Upon a swirl, we see well-defined legs holding to the sides of the tasting glass. On the nose, we detected fruit (cherry, stone fruit & dried fruit), honey, butterscotch, vanilla, and caramel along with whisky/cognac, and oak notes. Rich aromas!
Upon tasting, we found similar flavors, along with some others: Cherry, nutty (almond & walnut), baking spices, dried fruit (apricot), caramel, vanilla and butterscotch. There is a bit of whisky/cognac character to this extra-aged tequila. A warm dessert-like sweetness follows through to the finish with spice, leather and wood notes. Complex and balanced, this spirit is a treat!
Well done to the Suerte team for their King's Crown edition, presented in a stoutly-tapered bottle with a snug-fitting synthetic cork. The bright crown on the bottle projects well with the deep amber tequila behind it.
Tequila Connection gives this EA an average score: 92.4 resulting in a Rating of Excellent --
We greatly appreciated the opportunity to experience Suerte's Single-barrel Extra Añejo Tequila! We recommend you give it a whirl.
